SOCIAL MEDIA

🚩 My View

Algorithms are in principle, perfect because they would look at all the available possibilities and attempt to balance them for us as individuals. They work very well in many situations.

Everyone has different preferences and needs. It’s hard to say what you like at first before you type something into the browser. It has a long term memory that records all the words, websites, products you look at.

Imagine that you had a page with a discussion. There is a poll of five different types of music: Pop, Rock, Metal, Rap and Jazz. Now imagine you ask 100 people, what’s their favourite genre. Group of people with the percentage of 20% voted for Pop music, 18% voted for Rock, only 10% voted for Metal, most people voted for Rap with 27% of votes, second high votes got Jazz with 23%. If you look at those numbers from a different perspective, you can’t probably tell what am I trying to say, but I will explain it in a moment.

Rap music, as you can see, was the type of genre that caused the most interaction, meaning that it produced the most traffic…

So if we convert the percentage of music genre, that people voted as you can see in the chart, to social media platforms, we can get some really cool numbers for our study. I would like to explain my thought. By transferring Rock to Facebook and other genres like: Jazz to Instagram, Pop to Twitter, Rock to Youtube, Metal to TikTok we can tell what people like the most. You can say but this is not applicable for everyone. We are not there yet. How I already said “Metal” that’s TikTok for us right now is only great for some group of people. Other part of the audience actually prefers “Rock” that’s Youtube over TikTok, but those videos are only for some specific group of people. These groups are most likely teenagers. Their browser saves and looks for their preferences and gives them what they truly desire. The older age, by that I mean 20-80 years old are using other social media such as Twitter or Facebook. If we talk about Twitter, the main purpose of this social media would be to link people and allow people to share their ideas and thoughts with a very big audience. Facebook can only link people together (You may know list), let’s call them “Friends”, are allowed to share some content in a small group of people. Once we opened the topic Twitter there are many groups such are Musicians, Politician, Brand, Entertainer, Media personality, Sportsperson, and probably many more.

As a specific group, we like different things, music genre, social media platforms. We can see only those things that are prepared for ourselves and those posts change time to time. We grow, start liking different things and there are no longer the same old post that we were looking for showing up on our timeline. For example Instagram is a big fake, there is no-one without any filter on or without some photoshop touch ups, fixes and arrangements. So if some girl thing that she is fat, don’t look at Instagram and go out into the nature and do something that makes you fell good and beautiful.

There is another problem based on how we spend our time. Everyone has a life algorithm, you wake up, eat breakfast, brush your teeth, get dressed, go to school/work, lunch, sports activities, shower, dinner, bed time. That would be pretty basic day without your phone in your hand. What if you wouldn’t have the access to your phone for 24 hours. The catch is, you would be in a foreign culture, unfamiliar country without your phone. What would you do, what would your first steps be?

We are getting lazy and addicted! We need our phones more than we thing. It’s not healthy to be on our phones 24/7 but what should we do? If we go somewhere we use Navigation, if we are ill we order food – home delivery, if we need someone to talk to, we take our phones and talk to strangers. When I was younger, I was always outside because we played on the playground or football, hockey, badminton and many more games. The same with the timing. Before you had to say a particular time to be on a specific place and date. Nowadays you can change your meeting in 2 seconds. Social innovations have taken huge strides and it’s just up to us if we’re going to spend our time properly.

Hey Jennifer, I really like your approach! The transferring of music genres into social media gave me a new perspective of your thought and I was able to imagine it in a bigger picture. I personally don’t think that every person on Instagram uses filters and isn’t real, but the majority of most-followed people are, but overall, I agree with your opinion. We spend too much time on our phones and are so used to unreal standards and stereotypes, which is really sad. I really like that you want to use this blog in the future, good luck!
